Solving Incontinence In A Pet Dog Page 2
Before Jodie could have surgery there were yet more tests.  A dye test was done to make sure her urinary tract was plumbed in the correct manner, ie tubes going to bladder and not straight outside.
Apparently some puppies are born this way and it is not until they are grown up that their owners realise they are incontinent.
If she had been so it was correctable by surgically moving the tubes to the right place.  A dye that shows up on X-ray was injected and its progress tracked, she also had an ultra sound scan.
These tests showed her bladder was intact and normally plumbed but laid far back and unusually large, an issue that caused her no problem until her spay.

After Surgery
The operation went smoothly and after a few days we were allowed to collect her.  She was vastly improved.  I had been told the sucess rate for a cure was arround 50%.  She was not cured but a lot better.
She stayed on pain killers for a week and after 10 days her stapples came out. She had to have gentle lead only exercise for one month.
Once she had recovered we put her back on the propaline and incurine to see if these drugs would complete the job but sadly this did not work and although she was much better she was still very wet and distressed each time she woke in a puddle.
2nd Operation
After much debate and advice from vet and consultant we took the hard decision to put her through a second colposuspension operation.
After one week she was well enough to come home.  She was not totally cured but the improvement was dramatic.  She now lost maybe a table spoon or so a day, a manageable amount.
Today
She loses very little, if you didn't know she had a problem would be unlikely to notice.  She is on no drugs and leads a happy normal active life.  She is happy and so are we.
Pros and Cons of Treatments
Propaline
Pros: relatively cheap.  Effective in many biches including the elderly spayed many years previous. Easy to give, drops on food.
Cons: Doesn't always work, a drug so can have side effects
Incurine
Pros: An easy to give small tablet with a high sucess rate.  Can be used with Propaline for a stronger effect.
Cons: A drug it can have side effects.

Stilbistril
Pros: A powerful drug that may kick start the body into working. A type of hormone replacement,
Con:  Health risks with long term use may be serious.
Herbal Treatments
Pros: Might work
Cons: Just because its natural doesn't mean it is safe!  Some herbs are no better then untested drugs.  Go to a herbalist recognised by your vet.  It is not safe as a DIY method.
Human drugs
Pros: Very few
Cons: Very dangerous.  Only use under direct supervision of vet as many drugs safe for humans are deadly for dogs.
Homeopaphy
Pros: Gentle, safe
Cons: Might not do anything.
Collagen Implant
Injections of collagen round bladder neck to tighten things.
Pros: Good sucess rate
Cons: Not offered in Britain.  Strong chance of it wearing off.  Expensive.
Colposuspension surgery
Pros: Reasonable sucess rate where drug treatments have failed.
Cons: Expensive, painful.  A month of limited exercise following surgery.
