Solving Incontinence In A pet Dog Page 3
Other Coping Methods
Hygiene Pants
Many pet shops sell bitch hygiene pants.  These bikini hipster style garments are sold for incontinence and for bitches in season.  They can also be bought mail order from better stores.
A sanitary towel is slipped inside to catch any accidents.  After initial protests most dogs accept these well for the occassions where dripping would be a disaster.
Flooring
Sanded varnished floor boards are far easier to keep clean then carpet.  It is easy to do, cheaper then carpet and fashionable.  A quick swipe with a mop soon sorts out any problems.  Sanding machines can be hired by the day by many stores and a largish room should take no longer then a day to sand and a couple of days for the varnish to dry.  Lasts years.
Also consider tiled flooring, more differcult to do but low maintenence and very long lasting.
Furniture
Personnally I don't let dogs on sofas etc but if you do I would invest in large plastic sheets and then put washable throw overs on top.
Rugs
Most decent stores now sell a good range of machine washable rugs so there is no need for the house to look like a kennel.  Patterned ones tend to show less marks.
Bedding
Fleece vet bed is excellent, it is machine washable quick drying and easily obtainable either from pet shops, dog shows or mail order.

Smells
If you clean the floors and bedding regular there shouldn't be any.  Frebreze spray is good for smell removal as is biological washing liquid disolved in warm water.
If the dog smells wash her.  They don't melt and provided you use a gentle dog shampoo and don't let them chill afterwards she will come to no harm.  For long haired animals you might want to consider clipping short as then she has a chance to keep herself clean.
in conclusion
According to the company who make Incurine, up to 20% of large spayed bitches will become incontinent.  The number for smaller dogs is smaller but still significant.
Being incontinent need not automatically be a death sentence for your dog, modern treatments are very good and for many provide a complete cure.

For some sadly there is no cure or let up and in those circumstances or when owners simply cannot afford treatment the welfare of the bitch must be considered,is she still happy? Is she strong enough to go through treatment that may or may not work? Is she suffering? Also can your family cope?  while mild incontinence can be tolerable severe is very differcult.  At these times putting her to sleep may be the final answer. I hope it is not be the case for your dog as many can be much improved to the point of cure but if it is try not to feel guilty as it is not fair to let an animal suffer with no chance of improvement and it would be a kind release.

I hope these pages have helped you and your dog and that you can look forward to drier days to come.
