From the Desk of the Commish......

As we reach the halfway point of the season, the All-Star rosters are set. One team has more representatives than any other, that being the New York Yankees. GM Tom DeCola takes a softly-softly approach to management. Rather than tooling up for a league assault, or tearing his team apart in a rebuilding attempt Tom prefers evolution rather than revolution. Okay, his team haven't taken the AL by storm, but they have left themselves nicely placed for a post-season journey. After all, having a 120 win season is no guarantee for success, and as Anaheim showed the year before last, merely making it into the playoffs by the skin of your teeth can sometimes be enough. Surely one of the first names on the AL teamsheet must have been Robinson Cano. The 2b has been astounding this year, being one of the Indy League's top performers hitting .371 with an OBP of .393. Bagging 127 hits and 18 HR in the process, Cano has had a stellar season thus far, and if I was handing out MVP awards half way through the season, Cano may have to make room in his cabinet. Whether he has a World Series ring to go with that is yet to be seen, but who knows.

Elsewhere and in a similar vein, Miguel Cabrera is giving Cano a run for his money. The Texas left fielder his hitting .364 with a 1.082 OPS, 116 hits and 71 RBI. Okay the youngster is playing half his games in Arlington, but even this doesn't take the sheen off his obvious class. Texas find themselves well-placed at the moment in a very competetive AL West and although it has been Seattle and Oakland making all the running so far, don't be surprised if John Kostrzewski's outfit sneak in through the back door.

The former champs are back. The Angels have a stacked farm and have that mix of age and experience to push them all the way again. Key to their success has been the continued production from 1B/DH Jim Thome. Already this season he has 23 dingers. That coupled with his .336 average and his 1.181 OPS means that Steve Boyer and co. can expect more of the same from their veteran slugger. What is it these three all have in common? They're all the in the AL. The american League is extremely strong this year, and it will be difficult for their opposition in San Francisco. How will it turn out?
