Easy Polymer Clay Caricatures
Colins Polymer Clay Caricatures

My Name is Colin Haxton and I'm from Devon, England. I have always wanted to do caricatures of my family and friends, but I can't draw!. So I have developed the "Flatties", easy to do caricatures, using polymer clay as the basis for my efforts. I use them on Cards, or in box frames for hanging on walls or standing on desks. The victims love them!

Why do I call them easy caricatures? Well the main idea is simple. Make Polymer Clay 2D body "Cut outs" that are molded to shape, then mounted onto the caricature background using sticky pads or the Silicone Glue used by 3D decoupage crafters. This gives the caricature a fresh sense of movement and dimension. Then a photo head is cut out and again mounted away from the background using silicone glue to produce an instantly recognisable caricature figure. Easy, even I can do it!!

I have tried to make heads from clay that are recognisable, but to no avail. Using cut out heads from photgraphs allows instant recognition of the person and permits the viewer to immediatly appreciate the scene you are presenting. I have found that no one minds the "flat" effect of the photo head provided it is mounted away from the background using the silicone glue.

Below you will find some examples of my work (Sorry about the loading times, but I am not computer expert, just a polymer clay lover)

Please visit my Tips Page for some more "How to" methods I use.

This is a family caricature as a clock. Mounted on thick card, with backgounds and house of funky foam, windows are fimo mounted on card, then glued to the background. For figures, just roll out some clay, cut out shape, model if required, bake and glue using silicone adhesive (as in 3D Decoupage) into position. This gives the whole picture a wonderful 3D quality.

For the heads cut out a head from a photograph or use a photcopy on card, decide on positioning (Tilt forwards or backwards to suit) and mount using the silicone adhesive. Add a clock if you want one.

My favoured type of gift caricature at the moment uses figures mounted on a 7in x 5in picture frame without the glass.  (See below right) They look very good.
I am also experimenting with using sticky pads to mount the figures as well as silicone glue.

I have updated my Hints and Tips page with some more pics  so it may take a bit of time to load.
