The Naze is a 2 km. promontory of land above the seaside town of Walton-on-the-Naze on the northeast Essex coast of Eastern England [map below], just south of the Harwich estuary. It provides the only natural protective barrier for the local environment against North Sea storm/tidal flood surges that are predicted to intensify during the next few decades. However, the Naze is eroding at an alarming rate, thereby putting the future of Walton and its Backwaters at grave risk.  In 2001 nearly half an acre of land was lost overnight due to Naze cliff collapse in a January storm. In April 2005, twenty square metres of land fell into the sea through the effects of cliff rotational slumping and the consequential mudslides on strata newly exposed to the elements. Waves relentlessly undercut the base of the cliffs, encouraging the destruction of the cliffs to continue unabated. North of the cliffs, the low lying beach and saltmarsh was severely breached in 2007 [picture below]. It is now only a matter of time before large-scale storm devastation occurs.

NO COMPENSATION FOR EROSION LOSSES
Goverment hides behind wording of outdated 1949 legal statute
Guardian [Apr 08]: They'll be no update to laws preventing financial recompense for property owners who lose everything to the sea despite deliberate official neglect of existing defences.
BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS UNDER ATTACK!
'Natural England' puts fossil study before residential property safety
Eastern Daily Press [Mar 08]: Sea defences protecting cliff top dwellings on a site of special scientific interest will stay, thanks to a ruling against national nature group, Natural England, who argued that protecting the cliffs would prevent geological access, study and analysis, saying that it was in the 'national interest' that natural erosion should continue, and that this outweighed the owner's human rights[!] But a hearing has decided that, contrary to Natural England’s insistence, the site’s interest was better served by protecting it rather than by allowing it to be destroyed. Natural England’s plans to force erosion on the occupiers were found to constitute an “unnecessary and disproportionate interference” with human rights.
PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT FOR MINISTER?
Mail on Sunday [Feb 08]: "Environment secretary Hilary Benn has come under fire after flood defences outside his family's home were shored up while a historic harbour nearby is being abandoned to the sea."

Naze NE Corner - 9th November 2007:  A storm surge inundates the lagoons and threatens the 1953 sea defence embankment [bottom right] that protects the sewage works and nature reserve [see map below]. Further up the coast the Suffolk Surge also left its mark.

Pollution Threat!
The Environment Agency map above shows the extent of flood risk [blue area] to the Naze NE Corner. The sewage works is clearly vulnerable and would present a serious health hazard if the sea overwhelmed its defences during a storm surge, which would also wipe out the nature reserve. This could happen during autumn 2008 if improvements are not made sooner.

The Naze Protection Society [NPS] - is working to secure a future for the maritime heritage of the Naze. The Society [links below] aims to fund a Conservation Project - CRAG WALK - that entails the construction of a safe public viewing walkway, preserving as an eco-experience a strategic section of the crumbling, fossil-bearing cliffs that define the eastern coastline of the peninsula. The project, which will hopefully save the Naze Tower  [see: Clavell Tower saved! ] from collapse, is a locally approved joint venture with Tendring District Council [TDC] and active partner, Essex Wildlife Trust [EWT].  [ Gift Aid ]
