There are many factors governing your choice of pickups not least , their compatability with your chosen amplifier. REMEMBER, the most powerful pickup does not mean you will get the loudest guitar.
Generally, loud pickups are quite "woolly" sounding and it's not the pickup that provides volume; that is the amplifier's job!!
The pickup will determine the level at which the input of the amplifier starts to distort, and once distorting, it will not affect the output of the amplifier, only the tone.
Many of the finest Metal players play variations of the Fender Strat and get a good tone with a relatively low powered pickup................JIMI HENDRIX being one !!
Most of my STANDARD guitars come equiped with either TELECASTER single coil or RAZOR Humbuckers ( either vertically stacked coils like the BLADE or parallel mounted, like THE DISTORTION humbuck).
With the single coil TELE pickups you can acheive a clear crisp clarity BUT combined with the natural RESONANT qualities of REAL hardwoods, a longer sustain characteristic.
