WELCOME TO SIMON'S
LAND ROVER PAGE
|
|
|
|
About Me;
I'm 33 and originally from London but moved to South Wales in the Summer of 2002. Much better quality of life out here with beautiful scenery and not nearly as much traffic!
I've also got a MAD dog called Tess who prefers it as well, lot's of walkies!
My main interests are cars but they have to be different. You wouldn't catch me DEAD in a Mondeo!
The makes I have been most interested in are big Citroens and Land Rovers. (told you had to be different!) Presently I have a 1990 Citroen XM 2.1 SD and have just got a 1975 Land Rover series III SWB Diesel.
I decided to create this page to document my progress, or lack of, on my new project.

...towed by my faithfull Citroen XM. Outstanding tow car, the hydraulic suspension just 'took it'!
I'm sure this load was well overweight for the car but she still stopped and steared well with no 'light nose' feeling.

Hue (numberplate starts HUH) arriving home...

...the first job was to remove the roof to allow the full hard top to be fitted making the rear weather proof.

|
|
|
As you can see, Hue was a Truck Cab Pick-up. But as he came with a full hard top...

Rear View. Truck Cab easy to remove. Two large bolts at rear corners and three, or more, small bolts along top of windscreen. (one had to be cut off)

Voila! Hard Top and Safari rear door fitted. The Truck Cab and tail gate where sold to help pay for more bits.

First main job was to get Hue running. Put in a new battery, sprayed some easystart into air intake and.... he fired up! Not bad for 2 years sitting outside!
There was no clutch operation so had to remove floor panels to get access to slave cylinder for bleeding. Then found clutch was seized but freed it by holding peddle down and engaging the starter while in gear.

Now to get the wheels off. Easy enough, NOT! Two years of standing had taken its toll and the nuts had ALL seized. I found this out after bending a new wheelbrace!
Had to use a breaker bar with an extention but I had trouble finding a socket that was strong enough (I used a normal 27mm and it cracked!) as you can only get a 27mm impact socket in a set or to special order, for the price of a set!
I then discovered that Halfords do a 'Diesel Injector Socket' that is of impact quality that is 27mm. With a lot of heat, WD40 and swearing the wheels are now off!

Oh Dear! After getting him up on stands and removing the wheels I discovered that the chassis was MUCH more rotten than I thought. I knew it wasn't perfect but closer inspection revealed it needed replacing. As you can see from the pictures, I don't have the luxury of a private drive or garage so i've had to make a very tough decision. Hue will have to be sold and hopefully I can find another project that does not require such radical work. I'm sure he will be very usefull to someone as he is fitted with OverDrive and the engine and gearbox seem to be in good order.

Hue Has Now Been Sold.
Thanks to eBay, I've found a buyer for Hue. Gary, from Halifax West Yorkshire, has bought Hue and plans to use him for parts for many projects he has ongoing.
It just goes to prove that old Landies never die, they just get recycled!
