SHIELDAIG

HIGHLAND GAMES

Shieldaig is a small, pretty village sitting on the banks of Loch Shieldaig which is an offshoot of Loch Torridon. Opposite the village is Shieldaig Island, a bird sanctuary.

Shieldaig is a wonderful place to relax, you could spend all day admiring the view. It's not all piece and quiet though. For those who require a bit of nighlife Shieldaig boasts a hotel and bar!! Visit our Links page for more information.

2006 saw the Inverness Highland Games welcoming the World Masters Championships which were held at Bught Park in July.
SURROUNDING AREA MONSTER SPOTTING!!

The area around Shieldaig is excellent for hillwalking. There are several guided walks available. Much of the area is controlled by The National Trust for Scotland. One such popular walk takes in the Balgy Falls, a pretty series of waterfalls along the River Balgy.

For more information about the area and its wildlife you can visit the Torridon Countryside Centre where The Torridon Ranger Service offers two different weekly guided walks in July and August (booking essential).

There is also a Red Deer enclosure and museum nearby. For opening times and admission costs visit About Britain.com

The fishing village of Diabaig is well worth a visit. It is a sheltered harbour and claims a Salmon farm. The winding road that takes you there offers some spectacular views.

For those who like a bit of outdoor action there is plenty to keep you busy in the Torridon area. With climbing, abseiling, kayaking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, golf, sea fishing, both river and loch fly fishing and even falconry all on offer. Visit our Links page for more information.

Possibly Scotland's most famous resident, Nessie, lives in the depths of Loch Ness. The Loch is situated just a few minutes drive south of Inverness and around 1 1/2 hours drive from Shieldaig. Perfect for a day out!

The Loch is over 600 ft (180m) deep in many places and up to 740 ft (225m) deep at some points. Loch Ness is also the largets Loch (or lake) in Britain by volume. There is plenty more to do around Loch Ness in addition to monster spotting.
