Dumfries IO Report:
3rd & 4th November 2007.
This week saw Solway Seagulls host their 9th FISTF International Open in Dumfries. The tournament was well attended with over forty players for England, Wales, Cyprus and Norway present.
Saturday’s team event consisted of 6 teams with Solway fielding both an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team. Unfortunately both sides failed to qualify from their groups with the ‘A’ team defeated by San Siro and Hot Club Ecosse. In the other group Solway ‘B’ lost to EPL and Cardiff Bluebirds. The team event also saw Ben Staples and Sam Day make their Solway debuts, both performing well in tough matches.
The semi finals saw no.1 seed San Siro defeat Cardiff 4-0 and EPL edge out Hot Club 1-0 in a very tense affair. A repeat of last years final came to the same conclusion as 2006; with holders San Siro retain their title with a 3-1 victory.
Sunday’s individual Open also went with the seeds, with the top four reaching the semis. Last year’s runner-up and world no.1 Eric Verhagen had to settle for second place again as he was defeated by team mate Chris Thomas 1-0 in the final. The gulls had good performances from Max, Susan and Daryl who all qualified from tough groups. The veteran category again went to seedings as last years winner Phil Redman retained his crown with a 2-0 win verses John Lauder of Cardiff. Solway’s Iain Bell reached the semis only to lose 2-1 to no.2 seed John Lauder.
Solway did collect some silverware however, with Susan Wright getting the better of the ever improving Nicole Kettles and Kathryn Jamieson to take her 2nd Ladies title in her last two events.
Solway Seagulls would like to thank all players for attending our event this year. Also for all the help and support we received to make this event possible.
