THE MEANING OF THE PENTAGRAM

The Pentagram or the five-pointed star is the figure of Microcosm, the magical formula of man.
It locates the 5 mysterious centres of Force, the awakening of which is the Supreme Secret to White Magick. This magick Pentagram, or star of the Microcosm is the five pointed Star of Occult Masonry.
There are 5 orders of the Architecture, 5 Senses of the human body. Geometry is the 5th Science; In Freemasonry there are 5 points of Fellowship. There are 5 Euclidean bodies. (Triangle, the Cube, 8 sided figure, 12 sided figure, and 16 sided figure) 5 is the number of the soul, which is the Queen of all elements.

It is said by some very knowledgeable people that the use of the Pentagram is very dangerous for those not in possession of its complete and perfect understanding.
The Pentagram signifies the domination of mind over the Elements: The Forces of Air, The Forces of Fire, The Forces of Water and the Forces of Earth. Which is dominated by the Spirit. It is the symbol of Magick because it represents the 4 Elements of life plus Spirit,
The Pentagram of the Third Degree signifies the domination of the mind of the initiate over the Elements.

The reversed Pentagram, which many look on as the symbol of Black Magick and the Devil or Satan, is not entirely correct. Firstly there is no such person as the devil. This is an innovation of the Christian Church to suppress its followers. There is only good and Evil, Right or Wrong.
The Reversed Pentagram represents the Dark Age in which we live, the age of materialism, sensuality, and violence. In reality it represents the Spirit of Hidden Matter.

In some Orders the 2nd Degree initiate wears the point down. This means that the light of Spirit is still hidden in Matter of Spirit and is still subservient to the 4 Elements. This also shows that the 4 Elements still dominate the Spirit in the 2nd Degree and that he or she is still on the way to full development.

A Pentacle is the most important centrepiece of the Alter on which the objects are consecrated, salt and water can be placed on it for blessing.
It is usually a metal disc of copper about 5-6inches (128-154) in diameter. By choice and availability any material can be used.eg: Wood,Ceramics, even Wax as was used by the witches of old. Wood is a very preferable choice and it is easy to engrave or paint. It can be varnished or polished.

The Pentagram is viewed as an amulet and a symbol for protection.
The five points on the Pentagram represent each of the five elements
Earth -represents stability and physical endurance.(Bottom lower left point
Fire -represents courage and daring (Bottom right point).
Air- Represents Intelligance and the arts( Upper left point).
Water - represents emotions and intuition (Upper right point)
Spirit represents the all Divine. (Top point).

The circle around the star represents the Goddess/God, it refracts and reflects all light,bringing the wearer total intelligence, universal wisdom and protection.This becomes a graphic portrayal of Spirit ruling over the five elements.
Many people of many faiths wear some type of protection be it a cross or Saint Christopher and to the wearer the Pentacle is the same, there is nothing evil about it as so many people who do not understand it think

Some trivia for you: In the old folk song “ Green grow the Rushes O” there is a verse that says “5 for the symbols on the door” which means the Pentagram was inscribed to keep out evil. It is also worn as a lamen or pendant on the breast of ritual magicians as a protection in magickal rites; it is therefore obvious that 5 is a magickal number.
