SYNOPSIS

The refugee trail from war torn Europe leads to Casablanca, the gate way to Lisbon and from there to America – if they ever get out of Casablanca.  French Prefect Louis Renault (Claude Rains) exploits the refugees for financial and pleasurable reasons.  Cynical café owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) sticks his neck out for no one, he’s heard the hard-luck stories of the multi-cultural clientele too many times.  The arrival of important Nazi, Major Strasser (Conrad Veidt), leads Renault to exert his power in order to impress.  Charismatic underground resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henried) is expected in Casablanca and Strasser wants him arrested on any trumped up charge Renault can think up.  Laszlo arrives with the beautiful Ilsa Lund, which stops Rick dead – it appears they have history.  It is imperative that Laszlo has the letters of transit in order to leave Casablanca and continue his resistance work – Rick has the letters but is unwilling to give them up…
