Rurik was one of the founding members of the party. As a dwarven fighter, he was strong, dependable and good in a fight. Early on, an elven wizard called Sammath doubted his honour by questioning whether his sister could be trusted to look after money. Rurik took a very dim view of this, and in many ways, this was the beginning of the end for Sammath. He continued to cross Rurik and the temple of Hieronyous, and eventually met his end at the sword of Eric Merrick, a paladin. Meanwhile, Rurik had attracted the attention of a Drow Priestess, Lilith Duhlandir by killing her daughter Selena. Lilith had kidnapped the son of the thieves' guild and his companion Philo Greenleaf and Rurik led the attack on Lilith's compound freeing them. Later, Lilith took her revenge by murdering members of Rurik's family. From that point on, Rurik was a driven man. He took his revenge upon her financial interests in Khante, putting her plans back years.

Rurik continued with the party, leading them against Lilith. Unfortunately, Aust, a long term companion of Rurik's developed lycanthropy. On one full moon when he changed into a werewolf, Rurik managed to subdue him, however the dwarf was hurt in the process. It was a long wait for Rurik, however, the realisation that he had also contracted the disease led him to change his priorities. He left the party in an effort to focus upon the disease, to seek a way to control it and one day return.
