Pistol: Roehm twinmaster Pistol: Roehm Twinmaster .177 top model

This pistol FEELS right. An extension of your arm, molded in. You can adjust the handle to fit perfectly. We had to alter the sights carefully as it was shooting too high and out of the calibration range eg the adjustment allowed was not enough to hit the target at 10m and 20m.

A careful shaving of metal off the rear sight made it adjustable, for me, at least.

You get a carry case and with the top model plus you get the compressed air version and three eight shot mags + single shot mag .177 unblocking tool the gun which has a laminated handle(this is the handle to go for) and, as it is £80-00 odd separately you probably wouldn’t buy it later.

It registered 460 feet / sec which with that pellet weight would give about 3.34 Lb foot, quite low but it is in the consistency that it excels.

You can use single or double action. Single is where you will achieve all the accuracy as you cock it and set off a recoilless shot, whereas with double it reloads on the trigger which makes you move the trigger an inch and snatch as you squeeze one off.

With paper punching you can use one hand only. You stretch your arm out facing down raise the outstretched arm above the target and lower to kill zone on the paper target. Breathe out half way relax squeezing one off as you hold over the bull (or just the black area) for three seconds. You aren’t finished because the last thing you do before you let one off is remember to follow through. 1 sec after your shot ou keep aiming count one second and THEN bring it back down with the arms still out straight.

You can use other ways to follow through. As long as you aim after it has left the barrel. You can count to three. Etc etc.

There is little recoil. It is very consistent and when you find you are 3" out and fire another one through the same hole, you know your gun is outshooting you.

After progressing with the roehm for a while I think I could get all of them in the black more easily if I had a barrel weight. The gun is light and not nose heavy. This is fine but if you snatch some odd shots while the main ones have good grouping, it could be helped in this case by the roehm being more nose heavy.

They are caused in this case by the movement upwards if it does snatch. Luckily Roehm do a weight set, which isn’t included with the top model but can be bought as an extra from Mike Tawn or Ramsbottom: see "air gun world".

The working pressure is up to 200 bar. Down to 70 bar. As the pressure drops there is little inconsistency.

You can even shoot single action with the eight shot mag quite accurately. You would be better with the single shot mag.

They just slide in and out, there is a speed loader for plinking tin cans etc. very easy very slick – Extra to the top model. Weighs about a kilo but feels lighter. The trigger pressure can be reduced if you require, mine’s 450 g and the handle is very adjustable, it can be slid back to make the trigger further away and the height of the hand in it can be adjusted so it fits snuggly. I Shot my first 10m target where I got them all in the black the other day 45/50 points, I was dead chuffed. You are only really meant to be able to shoot out to 10m but clubs shoot 20m in competitions as well. The roehm is very good at 20m but you have to sight it up again. The open sights you get with it are very good. It was shooting too high so you had to aim 2 foot below the target but once this was sorted - brilliant. The only other minor gripe is that there is a noticeable click of movement if you push the rear sight – play. All I do is push it before I shoot, then I know it’s the same every time - because if there is play there, you need a consistent shot, and the sight to be in the same place every time. One of the other guys with a roehm said the same. It clicks – play. You just keep everything the same as you did on the sighters, then the only thing to vary is your own accuracy.

I’ve taken it to the outdoor range and got good results. You can hit a tin can at 30m 1st go. Or on semi auto you can hit a 20m rabbit sized target every time. Uses a lot of .177 s though, but great fun. Once I hit a 2p sized target I had just pointed to at 20m, 1st go. Not bragging I’m the worst shot at the club at the moment, but I’m just really into my targets. And if you can shoot well to order, it’s all the more satisfying.

You get 120 shots or so from the compressed air. You would need a cylinder unless you’ve already got one. You can convert them to CO2 for £50-00 but in the long run air is cheaper. I lasted a year on one filling of my 300 bar 12L cylinder, until I started using the air for a rifle as well.

Set it up well, leave off altering it and it will reward you for years to come. It FEELS right, and is so consistent:

A great intro to Pistol target shooting.
