Career history
Bernard was the cellist of the world famous Lindsay String Quartet and a founder member. The Lindsays announced their decision to retire in July 2005 at which time, their career had spanned almost forty years. They had one of the most stable and long lived careers in British musical history and were by far the most recorded String Quartet having over 60 CDs in the ASV catalogue including Beethoven’s entire quartet output (twice), 50 Haydns string quartets and complete works for string quartet by Schubert, Mozart, Dvorak, Janacek, Bartok and Tippett.
Bernard won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. As a student at the RAM, Bernard was awarded several prizes and gained a Recital Diploma. In his final year, he was made a Junior Professor. He has been a Fellow of the RAM since 1993 and in addition, has received 4 Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Keele, Leicester, Sheffield and the latest, from the University of Manchester in 2005.
The Lindsay Quartet started its professional career in 1967 with a five year residency at the University of Keele. In 1972, the Quartet moved and took a residency at the University of Sheffield and then in 1978, the Quartet became resident at the University of Manchester where they have remained since. All these positions involved teaching and coaching to a variety of levels in addition to giving concerts.
Bernard has organised courses and summer schools in England, Italy and Normandy, cello master classes in many places over many years and a regular series of master classes/ workshops at a chamber music weekend course known as 4strings88keys. He has also organised a weekend course for art and music which took place every 6 months in Essex. Bernard is now Professor of cello at the Royal Northern College of Music.
Bernard is the cellist in the Primrose Piano Quartet (violin Susanne Stanzleit, viola Robin Ireland, piano John Thwaites) formed in 2004 named in honour of the great viola player William Primrose CBE (1904-1982), one of the finest violists of the 20th century. The Quartet’s future engagements include several London concerts, including a Wigmore Hall recital. Peter Maxwell-Davies is writing a new piano quartet for the Primrose to perform in 2007. The Primrose will be making their second CD this year – a sequel to their first CD of British composers.
In 2006, Bernard joined the Dante Quartet one of the leading British Quartets (Krysia Osostowitz, 1st violin, Giles Francis, 2nd violin and Judith Busbridge , viola). He is now embarking on a second quartet career. Future engagements include a Wigmore Hall recital, Cheltenham Festival and an appearance in Madrid.
Bernard has plans for further recordings and concerts involving Piano Trios and Cello Sonatas.
