Of Stoneykirk.....There are two schools in the parish, both in wretched
order as to houses; and the salary only 100 merks.  There may be
above 130 scholars at them, for four months in the year, but after the
1st if March the number declines down to 20 or thereabouts. -

About Samuel Barclay

On the 1841 census above, it states that Samuel was a schoolmaster
So when we found the Death of Samuel Barclay at Greenfields Wigtown
in December of 1878 and it said his occupation was Land Surveyor
We were a wee bit confused, until a kind contributor sent the above
extract from the Statistical Accound of Scotland.
In those days you could not just work for four months of the year and
be idle the rest.
This explains his dual occupation
Samuel was also a Surveyor                                                  

Left and above is a small sample of Samuels work as a surveyor, the survey was of Little Aird work he carried out for The Rt.Hon.The Earl of Stair and is dated and signed on the 9th October 1869.    More
