BARASSIE BEACH - Barassie Beach is located on the west coast of Scotland next to Troon, it consists of a shallow beach of about 5 miles long with rocks at either end of it. With it being a shallow beach wading is required in daylight fishing sessions, but not required at night. The main species likely to be caught are coalies, flatties, cod, whiting and the odd bass, most likely are flatties and coalies. The best fishing spots are to be found at either end of the beach, first spot is at the P&O ferry terminal. There are two spots to fish here either along side the old sewer pipe (no longer any jobbies come out of it) or along side the ferry terminal wall. I fish along the wall first and if I get no joy then move but either way is ok. When fishing the beach low tide to high will see the best results. When fishing the terminal wall it is just a case of wading out and casting as far as you can, but when high tide comes then move onto the wall itself and go out along it. Do not go any further than where the fence finishes as the ferry security people will probably arrest you so be warned, they don't mind as long as you stay behind the fence. Fishing the pipe is just a case of moving back with the tide and wading and casting, try and place your baits along side the pipe as the tide advances. The other spot to fish is at the other end of the beach altogether, at the rocks. This venue is a low water mark, as you venture to the low water mark of the rocks and fish into the advancing sea. The ground fished into is sand beyond the rocks so the species of fish are the same as above. The baits to use at this venue are to be expected, they include crab, mussel, worms and mackerel. With flatties and coalies the main species then a 3 hook flapper rig is adequate. When fishing the beach the tide advances very fast so there is no place for heavy seat boxes its a case of cast and move back so fish light. I can't comment on the fishing in between these two venues as I have only attempted to fish there on a couple of occasions with the result a near punch up every time. The reason for this is that there are windsurfers and jet skiers galore, they have 5 miles of beach to scoot about but guess what .... they do it right in front of you, and are surprised when they catch your line and nearly get a 6oz lead and three hooks wrapped round their head. So best of luck if you decide to give it a go and punch one of the gits for me.
