Ballast Bank Troon
Ballast Bank Troon - The Ballast Bank is part of the harbour that was built by the Duke of Portland in 1808 for the export of coal and other goods to Ireland.  The bank itself was erected by the buildup of shingle and earth used by the sailors as ballast.

In the olden times Troon like most ports was a smugglers paradise, tunnels were dug to various homes and pubs in Troon to avoid the excise men and Redcoats stationed in Irvine.  Hidden cellars were also dug in peoples homes to store the contraband of alcohol etc many of which are still being discovered.
