SYNOPSIS

Five stories are interlinked by three macabre characters who spring to life from paintings in an antiquarian book shop.

Tale 1:  Die Erscheinung (The Apparition).  A stranger (Conrad Veidt) saves a woman (Anita Berber) from a crazed man (Reinhold Schunzel) who attacks her in the park.  

Tale 2:  Die Hand (The Hand).  Two Bon Vivants (Conrad Veidt and Renhold Schunzel) vie for the attention of a capricious dancer (Anita Berber) and so roll dice to decide who should win her.  

Tale 3:  The Black Cat.  A Taveller (Conrad Veidt) has heard tell of the beautiful wife (Anita Berber) of the local drunkard (Reinhold Schunzel).    

Tale 4:  The Suicide Club.  Inspector Silas (Reinhold Schunzel) is investigating a suicide club and struggles to gain entry.  

Tale 5.  Der Spuk (The Ghost).  A bored Countess (Anita Berber) loves her husband, the Count (Conrad Veidt), but feels neglected as he is constantly working.
